Menopause Overview

Making life easier with menopause support in the workplace

Major events like menopause can have a huge effect on a person’s life, at home and at work. The experience can be all-consuming – psychologically, emotionally and physically. It can be hard to know who to turn to for advice and support and local GP’s are not even trained to positively support menopausal employees. Information can be confusing, and people often struggle with their experiences and suffer in silence and alone…….!.

Menopause is one of life’s natural journeys and shouldn’t be a taboo subject that people avoid talking about in the workplace. Everyone should feel they can have a conversation with their line manager, especially when they need guidance and advice. But how confident do you think a member of your team would feel to talk to you about the menopause?

Research from Bupa & the CIPD has shown that almost a million women have left their job because of menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats and increased anxiety, while others are forced to take long-term absence from work to manage symptoms. In extreme menopause cases some individuals have actually taken their own lives via suicide.

Often a few simple changes to the working environment can make a world of difference – even just talking about the menopause openly can reduce the impact of some symptoms and enable people to continue performing well in their roles.

Line managers play a vital role in supporting colleagues with menopausal symptoms and so DLM Consulting have created an extensive resource library / toolkit with over 2000 documents relating to andropause, peri-menopause and menopause for Owners, Directors, line managers and employees so that they can:

  • understand and reduce the barriers that could potentially prevent a colleague going through the menopause transition from performing and/or developing to their full potential.
  • identify appropriate workplace changes or adjustments to support team members and help them thrive at work.
  • foster an inclusive working environment in which everyone is treated fairly including females, transgender and non-binary employees20

Making menopause an inclusive subject that no one is afraid or embarrassed to talk about will help make your organisation a great place to work, minimises the risk of claim, giving employees the confidence to ask for help and support if they need it and ensures its: Positive About Menopause (PAM)

Why the right menopause support matters

Menopause affects all women who reach mid-life. Yet many women in the UK are not supported effectively, either by clinical services or with all-round health and wellbeing support. Your business can help change this by supporting the women who work for you.

Removing the barriers to accessing support for menopause will demonstrate your company’s inclusivity while, at the same time, making a huge difference to your female employees’ lives.

And here’s why !.

60% OF WOMEN GOING THROUGH MENOPAUSE SAY THEY HAVE NO SUPPORT AT ALL IN THE WORKPLACE.
